Behind Every Great Man Is a Great Woman
By Emily Huseman
Among conservatives, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is endearingly regarded as “America’s Governor.” He’s been a hero for his constituents, unapologetically supporting medical freedom, parental rights and school choice, and a secure border.
Behind every great man is a great woman. For Ron DeSantis, that woman is his beloved wife, Casey. Their marriage is a refreshing reminder of what to strive for in today’s casual culture of loose morals and short-term interpersonal investment.
Casey obliterates the lie that women can’t be a mother, wife, and achiever at the same time. She is dedicated her children and the state which she co-represents. Although the mainstream media would never acknowledge it, she conducts herself in this life of service with sophistication, conviction, and class.
Her story of accomplishment, motherhood, and surviving cancer is a strong inspiration to all women that deserves to be told. Casey first met her husband on a golf course while she was working as a journalist and while he was a Naval officer stationed at the Naval Station Mayport.
During the Moms for Liberty lunch I attended this summer, Casey shared what she admires about him:
“In my opinion, he is the embodiment of the American Dream…He came from really humble beginnings… he wasn’t given anything, but he was a hard worker and he played baseball and that provided an opportunity for him to get through those two [Harvard and Yale] institutions,” she said. “What could you do with that? You could go and make a nice paycheck…but he decided to serve his country in the United States military because it was the right thing to do, because he wanted to give back to the country that gave him that opportunity.”
Casey herself is an example of the American Dream. An equestrian star hailing from Ohio, she was a runner-up Division 1 NCAA Champion on her college team. After graduation, she began an extensive career on various TV stations as producer and a morning anchor in Florida.
She received an Emmy award for on-air talent and two Emmy nominations for an investigative series and a documentary. Along with bearing the title of Emmy-award winner, Casey proudly bears another title: Mom.
When her husband was elected governor in 2018, she became the first Florida First Lady in more than fifty years to give birth to a baby in the governor’s Mansion. Her three kids are five years old and younger, which can create quite a few interesting stories. While holding her daughter on her lap and juggling the microphone at the Moms for Liberty lunch, Casey joked: “In twenty or thirty years they’ll do a tour through the mansion and they’ll be like, ‘And here is where the DeSantis kids put slime on the rug.’” Her passion for parenting and caring for children has extended beyond her own family to Florida families in need of support.
Hope Florida is one initiative that the First Lady started in 2019. Its purpose is to help single parents, those on government assistance, and others, in collaboration with faith based and nonprofit organizations. When a need has been identified in the community, such as a case of a single mother needing a bed for her child, Hope Florida directs local organizations to help her. Through this initiative, the specific needs of individuals are solved by private charity, helping Floridians become economically self-sufficient rather than government dependent.
After Casey was diagnosed with cancer in 2021, the Left spread rumors that the governor was “missing” after he went absent from the public eye for a few weeks. Where was he? He was with his wife as she was receiving treatment for her disease. Behind every great woman is also a great man.
