A Testament to the Power and Potential of American Women
By Jayme Chandler
On Saturday, September 26, 2020, President Donald Trump announced Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his third nominee to the Supreme Court. President Trump formally introduced Barrett by stating: “Today, it is my honor to nominate one of our nation’s most brilliant and gifted legal minds to the Supreme Court. She is a woman of unparalleled achievement, towering intellect, sterling credentials, and unyielding loyalty to the Constitution.”
Judge Amy Coney Barrett is an exemplary scholar, dedicated mother, and an inspiration to women across this country. Her achievements serve as a testament to women everywhere that the pursuit of a successful career and the creation of a beautiful family are far from mutually exclusive endeavors. A devout Catholic, distinguished scholar, and devoted mother, Amy Coney Barrett represents the limitless potential of the American spirit and the best this country has to offer. The Conservateur is excited and inspired by Judge Barrett’s nomination to the highest court in the land, and we are proud of our President’s continued commitment to empowering faithful, career-driven women.
Amy Coney Barrett’s record speaks for itself. She attended Notre Dame Law School, graduating first in her class, summa cum laude, in 1997. She served as a judicial law clerk for Judge Laurence Silberman and then for late Justice Antonin Scalia. After working for a private law firm in 2002, she returned to her alma mater, where she taught constitutional law and statutory interpretation. In 2010, she became a tenured law professor, winning “Distinguished Professor of the Year” three times. In 2017, she was nominated by President Trump as a United States Circuit Court Judge, where she then served in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Just eleven months after her nomination, she was added to President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee shortlist.
Amy Coney Barrett is a mother of seven children, and her youngest two children are adopted from Haiti. Her dedication to her faith and family, as well as her unparalleled mastery of the craft of Constitutional law is proof of the endless potential of women in this country. In her nomination speech, Barrett told the world: “While I am a judge, I’m better known back home as a room parent, carpool driver, and birthday party planner.” In the same speech, Barrett confirmed her commitment to upholding the Constitution by stating: “I would discharge the judicial oath, which requires me to administer justice without respect to persons, do equal right to the poor and rich, and faithfully and impartially discharge my duties under the United States Constitution.”
Despite her distinguished career, upstanding moral character, originalist interpretation of the Constitution, and transparent record of impartiality, Barrett and her family continue to endure vicious attacks from the Left. From likening Barrett’s faith to “The Handmaid’s Tale” to scrutinizing the adoption of her children, progressives have once again weaponized feminism. Rather than celebrate the accomplishments of an incredible woman and the prospect of her permanent role on the nation’s highest court, the far-Left has reared the ugly head of feminism to tear Judge Barrett down. The Left’s attack on Amy Coney Barrett is everything they claim to stand against: conspiratorial, bigoted, and fervently anti-woman. Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination and the partisan, sickening coverage that followed is just another example of the “woke” “feminist” brigade falling short.
Undeterred by the Left’s shameless bigotry and sexism, Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination marks a monumental occasion for American women. As Amy so gracefully put it: “Should I be confirmed, I will be mindful of who came before me... Justice Ginsburg began her career at a time when women were not welcome in the legal profession. But she not only broke glass ceilings, but she also smashed them. For that, she has won the admiration of women across the country and, indeed, all over the world.” We could not think of a better woman to carry on the torch of strong women in the Supreme Court. We pray for Amy’s smooth and swift confirmation and hope that our country can put aside partisanship to rally behind this historic moment.
