TC’s Fall Book List

By Anabella

When the weather gets cooler, there’s nothing we want to do more than curl up by the fire or on the porch with a blanket, a good book, and maybe even a drink. For those avid readers, or those who are looking to bury their nose in a book instead of social media, we’ve got you covered. Here are five books that will keep you entertained during the fall season.

The Guest List

The Guest List by Lucy Foley has become very popular over the past year, and for good reason. It’s the type of book you just can’t put down! Set on a desolate island with a mysterious past, the story takes place at a seemingly perfect wedding for a seemingly perfect couple. That is, until a murder takes place. Showcasing the perspectives of several characters, Foley creates a perfect murder mystery that will have you turning pages long after you swore you’d go to bed.

The Woman in the Window

If mystery books are your thing, the next book on your list should be The Woman in the Window. Narrated by a woman with agoraphobia, the book tells a story of Anna, who is confined to her home, and witnesses something she shouldn’t have one night while spying on her neighbors. No one knows what happened, and even Anna struggles to prove that what she saw was real, which takes this mystery thriller to the next level. Full of unexpected twists and turns, this book will keep you on your toes and surprise you up to the very last minute. Once you finish this novel, check out Netflix’s new movie rendition!

The Midnight Library

Unlike the first two novels, The Midnight Library is not a mystery, though the storyline isn’t typical either. This book follows a woman, who upon feeling as though her existence is meaningless, decides to take her own life. Rather than face death, however, she finds herself in a version of purgatory that unfolds into a library, where each book represents a different path her life could have taken. She enters these alternate realities, where she becomes an Olympian, a rock star, a wife, or a mother, and in each, discovers the meaning of life. It’s the perfect book to remind us of the consequences of our actions, no matter how small, and how influential we are to those around us. It’s like the modern take of the old Christmas movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. Mixing important lessons with fun side quests, this book will make you ponder what your own Midnight library might look like.

Peace Like a River

Peace Like a River is perfect if you’re looking for a classic. Told beautifully from the perspective of a young boy, the story is about a family’s resilience and the adventure the narrator and his father embark on in order to find his older brother, who ran away from home in fear of being charged with murder. Intertwining themes of faith and family with a winter setting in the 1960s rural Midwest, the novel is perfect for the fall season. The characters are honest and loveable, funny and strong, and will have you personally involved with the story only a few pages in.

Nine Perfect Strangers

Hulu's show doesn’t hold a candle to the novel it is based on. Liane Moriarty, the author of Big Little Lies and Apples Never Fall, sets the stage at a wellness retreat where nine strangers, each with their own hardships and insecurities, gather to be personally transformed. There’s something suspicious about the retreat, but each of the characters, searching for something, are willing to put up with it on their journey to recovery. As the retreat goes on, we discover just what each character is recovering from, and what exactly is going on at Tranquillum House. Not as mysterious as The Guest List or The Woman in the Window, this book gives you just the perfect amount of sleuthing, while entertaining you along the way. Between the unique characters and their situations, you’ll definitely connect with them.
