Healthy Hair, Fabulous Life

By McKenzie Starr

Between cheering on the sidelines of NFL games to modeling at gigs in Dallas, I’ve put my hair through ultimate glam for many big events and jobs. My hair has been on a journey. Today, it’s the longest and healthiest it's ever been in my life. Here are five tips and tricks that changed my hair game.

All the Silk

A silk pillowcase was something I never knew I needed, but I haven’t looked back since getting one. I wake up with my blowout fully intact. I notice a huge difference if I am at a hotel or somewhere without one. Silk pillowcases counteract breakage in the hair and preserve the styling. There are also benefits for your skin. Eliminating the friction between your skin and the pillowcase will help prevent wrinkles as well.

Gentle Brushes + Combs

Besides investing in a good brush, I also stand by brushing your hair from the bottom up. It blows my mind that some people don’t know this tip! I usually section my hair and comb it from the bottom up to eliminate breakage. Comb your hair with gentleness and love; it will thank you in the long run.

Leave-in Conditioners

Just like skin needs facemasks, hair needs leave-in products and conditioners to hydrate, eliminate frizz, and add some shine! I use the “It’s a 10” product after each time I wash my hair. In addition, I recommend using a hair mask once a week.

Taking your Vitamins

Biotin has benefits not just for your hair but also for your skin, nails, and overall bodily health. Starting a vitamin regimen of essential nutrients promotes healthy hair maintenance habits.

Minimizing Heat

Easier said than done, and I get it! I have to curl my hair for all of the Texan football games I cheer in. Minimizing hair damage can be done in various ways. I suggest finding a good dry shampoo and heat protectant if you have to use heat. Oh, and a good scalp treatment.
