Analyzing Fall/Winter Runways to Reinspire Our Wardrobe
By Isabelle Redfield
We’re pleased to note that elegance is back on the agenda this season, with the culture shifting from the fleeting Y2K trends (“brat”) to understated sophistication (“demure”). Many of the pieces we invested in last fall have carried over to this season. In other words, no major surprises. Your guiding themes: polish and pragmatism. Oh, and volume!
This season’s standout runway colors include chili red, ink blue, olive green, and an unexpected conversation-starter: mustard yellow, courtesy of Miu Miu and Bottega. As for the staples, expect your usual sand, chocolate brown, and pony-hair prints like leopard and zebra.
We certainly can’t splurge on hot-off-the-runway pieces in Biden’s economy, but analyzing these looks helps sparks inspiration as we transition our wardrobes to cooler temps. This fall ‘24 color palette has trickled down to buyers’ desks and into stores. Here are some polished runway looks and suggestions for the savvy shopper, so she can recreate.
Chili Red
Our bright reds have seasoned into a richer, deeper hue. Whether you call it burgundy, “Red Cola” as Elle coined it, or “Chili Red” per Editorialist, the choice is yours. My advice? Pick the shade that flatters you most and wear it with confidence. After all, it’s election season, and we know exactly which team we’re rooting for.
Olive Green
Olive green is the color to season with. There’s no need to splurge to incorporate it into your wardrobe. Consider adding a pair of sneakers, a basic sweater, or a sleek army jacket. And for those with green eyes, a new eyeshadow palette in these hues is a must-try.
Ink Blue
Take note: those extra Chloé shots are included because chocolate brown and blue together is simply divine— a stylish upgrade from the classic black and blue combo. A deep ink blue will carry you effortlessly through the holidays and even into spring. This universally flattering color is definitely worth considering, and easiest to achieve through dark denim.
Mustard Yellow
Yes, it’s mustard— but think Dijon on the darker side of the spectrum and buttercream on the lighter. Yellow is a color many shy away from, but when done right, earthy tones can soften its intensity, creating an elegant, laid-back look that pairs with just about anything. If yellow doesn’t compliment your complexion, a shoe or bag could do the trick. Don’t underestimate the impact of a mellow yellow— it could be the pop of color you didn’t know you needed.
Leopard and Zebra
Leopard will never— and I repeat, never— go out of style. The best part? It pairs effortlessly with everything. This season, it looks especially striking with denim and red. For the bold statement-makers out there, consider swapping out last years’ red tights and socks for this timeless pattern, as seen all over the collections from brands such as Zimmermann and Isabel Marant. If leopard is outside your comfort zone, try a subtle zebra print or incorporating the pattern into accessories, like a belt or headband.
A Powerful Alternative: Brown
While brown hardly needs a reintroduction, if you’re looking for styling inspiration, Ralph Lauren’s New York show is the perfect reference. Nearly every look was awash in rich western-brown hues. (Click any photo to take you to the corresponding collection.) This timeless color is a safe bet for splurging on an investment piece, whether it’s a jacket or a handbag.
P.S. a slinky, silk dress with a blazer will be an it girl look this fall.
