Streetwear x Timeless Style Guide
By Chase
For the first six years of my life, I lived in brightly-colored smocked dresses and bows. Yes, my mother raised me to dress like a model out of a Ralph Lauren magazine. To her pleasure, often, you can catch me wearing my washed-denim jeans and a silk blouse, in true, All-American girl style. I'll admit it, I look the best in timeless outfits, and truthfully that is the style that I know best. Yet, there is part of me that craves an edgier aesthetic when the occasion permits. This brings me to the ever-evolving and sometimes intimidating world of streetwear. The infamous Off-White belt seemingly threw streetwear into the spotlight, but it has come so far from just a craze over the last few years.
What initially drew me to streetwear was how effortlessly cool it is. How can clothing items as simple as hoodies and nylon belts be considered extremely fashionable? I think all little girls grow up thinking that fashion means high heels and diamonds, but the tables really did turn with streetwear. Seemingly, boyish and casual clothing items have been soaring off the shelves and onto the streets— donned by models, artists, and even just the-girl-next-door. This “too cool for school” vibe seems like a stark contrast to the well-thought-out and carefully-calculated outfits modeled by classic brands. How can a style that seems so effortless be so perfectly contrived? Many are worried they can't pull off streetwear as it seems to bring a certain amount of swagger. Streetwear looks like you threw on whatever was clean in your closet regardless of the pieces— yet, it all goes together flawlessly.
An integral part of streetwear is the confidence of the person sporting it. However, you don't have to be Kaia Gerber to pull it off— confidence is key. Streetwear pieces can be integrated into any outfit or style— if you wear your outfit with pride, no one can doubt your aesthetic. As someone who typically dresses preppy, my favorite looks combine streetwear elements with a timeless style. This crossroads of old and new creates a chic appearance that can be dressed up or down.
Layered Hoodie
It can be hard to showcase your style in the winter months. The cold seems to bring out a sea of puffy black jackets and frumpy layers that make any city crowd look like a blur. Why not stand out? Pair a camel, tweed topcoat, or leather jacket with your favorite vintage or high fashion hoodie. Finish off your cosmopolitan guise with a pair of trousers or washed-denim jeans, accompanied by some sneakers or boots to elevate your everyday style. Adding casual elements to traditionally dressier outfits creates the ease that streetwear aims to exhibit. Whether your hoodie of choice is branded designer or a thrift-store find, you are bound to revamp a seemingly basic aesthetic.
Mini Bags
We all know that the perfect bag can make or break an outfit. If you don't live under a rock, you've seen tiny bags pop up on every influencer's insta feed recently. A mini bag is a versatile staple that can be added to any outfit! From a casual day of errands to a night out with the girls, a mini bag will carry only the essentials, while having a high-fashion allure. The Prada Nylon re-edition 2005 or the Knotted Mini City bag from Zara is a perfect place to start when entering the realm of mini bags. While these tiny toters are physically a small aspect of any outfit, they are sure to make a big statement.
Gold Chains
Gold never goes out of fashion-- chunky gold chains are a staple that I hope is here to stay for good. Gold chains are fun— yes, I said it— FUN! You can mix and match styles, weights, add locks, or other charms and maybe even wear four at a time. Gold chains add an element of swagger to any outfit, whether you are hitting the town or brunching with the fam. No need to worry, gold is a gorgeous metal for any skin tone as well-- why do you think we all love it? The best part about this addition is it can be found anywhere. From your favorite department store to your mom's closet, nothing says badass like a few gold chains around your neck.
Oversized Blazer
Many cringe upon hearing the word blazer— I often think that a stiff, bland blazer is less than desirable. The oversized blazer, however, is a whole new ballgame. Take any blazer out of your brother's closet, pair it with some jeans, or even a mini skirt to create a relaxed look that is sure to turn heads. While oversized items can be seen as sloppy, the blazer comes off as refined and purposeful. Oversized blazers also add the element of texture to outfits that are hard to achieve with other coats and jackets. Oversized blazers can be found in a fabulous array of tweeds, plaids, and checks in various colors and materials to add a pop to any plain outfit.
Chunky Sneakers
Popularized in the 80s and 90s, the chunky sneaker is a sporty addition to any city-chic look. Who would have ever thought that this dad-like footwear would be all the rage in 2020? Catch just about every model, influencer, and fashion guru rocking these in their off-duty 'fits.' Kick on a pair of Filas, New Balances, or Balenciagas with a matching set or your favorite vintage jeans for a playful look. No need to sacrifice comfort for style; these sneakers get you both!
