Your Ski Getaway Style Guide
By Jacqueline Thomas
With winter vacations come the challenge of looking fabulous while keeping warm.
Whether you prefer a winter vacation lounging by the fire with a good book and a glass of wine, or you are the more adventurous type to hit the slopes to explore the snowy winter wonderland, this packing guide is sure to meet your cold weather vacation needs.
When packing for a vacation, I always started with the overall feel of what I will need and want my look to be, and then work my way down to the smaller details. My personal fashion rule I follow for all clothes is: tailored and flattering to my figure. This can be difficult to achieve with snow clothes that tend of be boxy or puffy, but we never back away from a challenge!
Ski & snow
When skiing you want to think in the layers you are going to dress in— layers you can easily take on and off throughout the day depending on the weather and your comfort levels.
I went through a variety of ski styles and brands— Goldbergh, Perfect Moment, Jet Set, and Toni Sailer are a few fun names to know beyond your basics. Free People also makes great ski basics. I finally settled on this amazing red one-piece ski suit by Cordova. Underneath, I slipped on Sheetex tights (the best tights in the game!), Smart Wool leggings, a long sleeve shirt, and a warm black turtle neck sweater. Two more essential items for staying warm on the slopes are a good thick skiing sock and warm snow gloves that won’t get wet from the snow. Finally, a helmet is essential for safety— stick your tried and true sporting companies, and accessorize with some reflective goggles (Chimi and POC are great).
Winter dinner
Winter vacation dinners provide a fashion challenge, mostly when it comes to a good shoe that will look cute, but also hold up in the snow. I start planning my outfits with my favorite boot of the season—Something with a medium heel in black, or more of an all weather Chelsea-Combat. From there, build your outfit from the bottom up with a combination of leather, fur, and a colors that blends together nicely. Throw in accessories like fur or fuzzy coats, big scarfs, hats, beanies, and gloves.
Lounge by the fire
Cold weather allows time to relax by the fire, read a good book, binge movies, and of course, comfortable clothes. I like to bring some kind of lounge clothes that are not the pajamas I sleep in, so that I feel put together and comfortable wearing them in the ski resort after hours and in front of family and friends. I like a matching set or a sweatshirt paired with some my favorite leggings or feminine joggers. Slip in some UGGs and volia!
Self-care
The colder weather can lead to dryer skin. It’s important to bring your normal skin care and self care routines to take care of yourself when you are outside in the elements. This is also a good to wind down after a long day of skiing. Extra moisturizer is a MUST. And PLEASE do not forget the sunscreen! The sun reflects on the white of the snow and can be very damaging to your skin. The worst sunburn I ever got on my face was skiing during my senior year of high school. The experience was so painful it scarred my upper lip. I wear 50 SPF on my face every day now and do multiple applications when I’m out skiing. Your favorite dry shampoo is must, too— helmet hair!
